Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Once again, we had two shootings. Friday night, a little before 11 p.m., there were shots fired in the 200 block of East 56th Street. Officers found casings but no victims. On Saturday morning, at around 4 a.m., officers were alerted to a female gunshot victim at a hospital. Even though she refused to cooperate, she did state the shooting happened “near the area of PCH between Magnolia and Daisy Avenues.” (LBReport)
  2. City planners intend to boost business development in North LB by redoing Artesia Boulevard. The road will be repaved; there will be additional streetlights, bike lanes, and crosswalks. While investors have been focusing on Atlantic Avenue, it is hoped that the Artesia redo will attract them to this area, too. (LB Business Journal)
  3. The LB Port is transitioning to its peak season. There was an 11.3% increase from August 2020 to this year. Imports are up 11.7%. Exports decreased 5.3%. However, operators acknowledge that they need to “find the long-term solutions that will satisfy consumer demand, increase efficiency at the ports and reduce costs for our customers.” (gCaptain)
  4. On Saturday, Pigeon’s Roller Rink will host a pop-up at 2nd & PCH. There will be “reservation-based open skate sessions, classes and private parties.” As you may have heard, the pandemic has boosted the popularity of roller-skating. (OC Breeze)
  5. The QFilms festival is returning for its 28th year. It is the city’s longest running film festival and celebrates the LGBTQ community. There will be 65 films, documentaries, and shorts. Audiences can come to the Art Theatre and the Museum of Latin American Art between September 30 and October 3 for outdoor screenings. (Q Voice News)
