⏰ Daylight Saving Time Poll! πŸ€”
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, there are dueling studies pointing to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 58.8% don’t like daylight saving time, while 41.2% do.

πŸ“° Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Chittick Field at 1900 Walnut Avenue is closed as of Wednesday until further notice. While we know it as a football field, lighted soccer fields and a running track, the city actually designed it to be a stormwater catch basin. After the recent rains, the venue collected significant amounts of trash and contaminants that need to be removed. However, before this can be done, the ground has to be dry enough for heavy equipment to drive on it. And this might take up to 90 days. (Long Beach Parks)
  2. Of course, the recent rain is a godsend for residents. Now that the city’s water budget may be a little more flexible, it may reverse some of the more Draconian water use restrictions. For example, as of Thursday, much of the county is now only in a β€œmoderate drought.” However, until we hear otherwise, watering is curtailed to Tuesday and Saturday afternoons and early mornings. (Patch)
  3. Do you remember the survey the city conducted late last year about street vending? The results are in, and 2,312 people responded. Residents support the vendors for their β€œcultural value” while being concerned about food safety. Businesses say the vendors are taking away customers. Vendors, by and large, only weighed in minimally. Existing laws limit the city’s ability to regulate street vending fully; however, it might keep stationery sidewalk vendors out of residential areas, require full access opportunities, and declare buffer zones near schools or libraries. We may hear more later this year. (Long Beach Post)
  4. Wilson High School film students put together a short film, submitted it to the Student Television Network (STN) 2022 Fall Nationals competition, and won first place! The team members’ names are Ernesto Felix, Matteos Mandalia, Ky Stopp, Ben Tinsley and Mia Urena; the short film is β€œRebirth.” What’s next? Well, the STN Convention in March will take place in the city; and yes, the film students will compete in that, too. Congratulations! (Long Beach Post)
  5. Meanwhile, the Millikan girls' soccer team bested Wilson’s team on Tuesday. The 3-0 win set a finishing touch on Millikan’s Moore League title. A shoutout to the scoring players Emily Frost, Audrey Stewart and Sierra Sythe, as well as goalkeeper Jordan Mendoza. Showing true sportsmanship, Wilson’s coach said of Millikan’s team that β€œthey are very well coached, very well organized and disciplined. They work hard, and they deserve it.” Congratulations!
