📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. A 46-year-old man thought it would be a great idea to point a high-powered laser at aircraft. According to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), this has been ongoing for about a year. Last week, after narrowing down his location, officers collaborated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to catch him in the act, in the 1600 block of Silva Street. The agencies arrested him and took him to the City Jail “on one count of felony discharge of a laser at an occupied aircraft and violation of parole.” There’s no bail. (Patch)
  2. What was SWAT doing in the 1100 block of Magnolia Avenue on Wednesday? A little after 11 a.m., the LBPD responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon. An adult male victim told officers that a relative, another adult male, had threatened him with a knife and was in the two-story home they shared. That man didn’t want to come out, and officers closed roads “from Magnolia Avenue and Tenth Street to North Loma Vista Drive.” SWAT rolled, and the knife-wielding man was put in handcuffs at 6:27 p.m. (LBPD, Long Beach Post)
  3. On Tuesday, Long Beach Airport customers noticed signs for CLEAR, the verification technology that’s already in some other California airports. Mayor Rex Richardson was present for the big unveiling and welcomed CLEAR because it gives “travelers another convenient option for a streamlined security screening process.” If you sign up with the service, you won’t have to scrounge for your ID any longer, just verify your identity with your eyes or fingers. (City of Long Beach)
  4. If you love the friendly staff at Harbor Freight but haven’t been too keen on driving to Carson, Downey, Lomita or Lakewood, take heart! We’re getting a Long Beach Harbor Freight location at 530 East 33rd Street. Best of all, the grand opening is expected to take place in March! (Harbor Freight)
  5. The Aquarium of the Pacific will celebrate its 20th annual Festival of Human Abilities on January 28 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. If you’ve never been to the event, you’re in for a treat, with “wheelchair dance, live music, and art demonstrations.” One of the classes taught is adaptive SCUBA diving. (Aquarium of the Pacific)
