Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Urban Commons Update: Having been called “fraudsters” by a bankruptcy judge, the former Queen Mary operators did show up in court on Friday. The application for “$2.4 million in COVID-19 relief aid under the ship’s name?” It was a “clerical mistake.” But don’t expect restitution. One of the operators “doesn’t have the personal funds to pay back the federal government after losing his fortune in the pandemic.” The judge will decide next week what to do. (LB Post)
  2. Redistricting in a nutshell: As of Thursday, CD 4 now extends north, including El Dorado Park and its neighborhoods. CD2 and CD3 now split Bluff Park. Wrigley and Los Cerritos are put back together, but Bixby Knolls is split. CD 5’s ELB district is sliced, becomes part of Cal Heights, and attaches to a part of Bixby Knolls. CD 1 now oversees the western port. However, the Queen Mary and Entertainment District go to CD 2. (LBReport)
  3. We’re going to have an in-person tree-lighting, y’all! It will be on November 30 at Terrace Theater Plaza from 5 to 8 p.m. There “will be local food trucks, holiday photo booths, kid train rides and the tallest tree in the city, which will be illuminated when Mayor Robert Garcia flips the switch at around 6:30 p.m.” If you want to be there, show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result for anyone over the age of two. (LB Post)
  4. If you’re wondering what to do with the kids when the LBUSD shuts down for the winter break, fret no more. LB Parks, Recreation and Marine announced Friday that it’s stepping up to the plate to “engage youth ages 5 to 12.” There will be winter camps at LB Parks that run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To sign up, be there in person on December 1 at 8 a.m. or be there online at 10 a.m. (Patch)
  5. A week ago Saturday, MOLAA celebrated its 25th anniversary. At that time, organizers honored Jaime Jarrin, the Spanish-language announcer for the L.A. Dodgers, and Chicana Artist and Activist Dr. Judith Baca. Ozomatli provided the tunes, Sami Hayek designed the commemorative wine bottle, and 500 in attendance celebrated. (Random Lengths News)
