Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- The hospital rankings are in. Released by the Leapfrog Group, they assign a safety grade to the various facilities. How did LB do? College Medical Center at 2776 Pacific Avenue scored a βD.β LB Memorial Medical Center at 2801 Atlantic Avenue and St. Mary Medical Center at 1050 Linden Avenue scored a βC.β If you are looking for care at a facility with a better grade, check out the Garden Grove Hospital at 12601 Garden Grove Boulevard (A) or the Lakewood Regional Medical Center at 3700 East South Street (B). (Hospital Safety Grade)
- There was a shooting on Thursday near the Chestnut Market in the Willmore neighborhood. Two men are in custody after the PD began its investigation at Chestnut Avenue and 8th Avenue. Taking place just after noon, officers βfound several shell casings strewn across the intersection.β It is noteworthy that Willmore is one of the neighborhoods affected by βan elevated number of shootings.β (LB Post)
- On Tuesday, the LB Area Chamber of Commerce offered clarifications on last weekβs updated Health Order. For example, musicians and performing artists may perform for an audience without wearing a mask. Also, when two employees are traveling in the same vehicle, they must wear masks. (Patch)
- On Thursday, there were 110 ships waiting to enter the ports of LB and L.A. While we hear a lot about supply chain issues, we donβt learn about the human cost of these delays. βMental trauma, mental stress, and detachment from homeβ¦ itβs all there. They are heartbreaking stories like suicidal thoughts, divorce in the family, death of a loved one. I have heard numerous sailors telling me that they were in midwaters and their father or mother or loved ones died back home in Asia or other countries, and they could not go there,β a reverend with the Lutheran Maritime Ministry explained. Sailors have contracts that obligate them to serve on the ships for four to six months, but the bottleneck at the ports has kept them there longer. βMany are begging to get off the ships.β (Fox 11)
- Did you know that thereβs a World Series of Comedy? I didnβt, either. However, there is, and local comedian Wyatt Cote won it. Even so, a Thursday report notes that the third-generation Long Beacher headlined a show at the 4306 East Anaheim Street Port City Tavern free of charge. But if you want to see him there on December 7, youβll have to pay. (ABC 7)
