Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- The colonoscopy is the test that everyone loves to hate. In the past, doctors would hand you a referral on your 50th birthday. However, we learned Friday that experts have been suggesting having this test done for the first time as early as age 45. “A colonoscopy is a procedure where a physician uses a long, thin, flexible, lighted tube to check for polyps or cancer inside the rectum and the entire colon.” (LB Post)
- Belmont Shore Stabbing Update: On Sunday evening, there was a fatal stabbing on East Ocean Boulevard. At the time, a 33-year-old man died. On Monday, the LBPD located a 26-year-old suspect near East 10th Street and Gardenia Avenue. The suspect’s “bail was set at $2 million.” (CBS)
- Update on Gerrie Schipske’s Run for City Attorney: We previously discussed the former councilwoman’s decision to shift the focus of her political office run from mayor to city attorney. Now we know why she made the decision. “Voters expressed concern that no one was challenging the hand-picked successor to the retiring city attorney.” “The retirement of the current City Attorney offers the opportunity for change. However, special interests and City Hall insiders are trying to engineer the selection of the next City Attorney so that nothing changes for them,” the experienced attorney explained. (Beachcomber)
- On Thursday, the LBPD received "multiple reports of shootings, carjackings, and a kidnapping, which led to a hostage situation" in the 200 block of East 57th Street. The 29-year-old suspect hid at a church in the 21600 block of Alameda Street. SWAT rolled and officers attempted to negotiate a peaceful de-escalation. However, the suspect was found “with self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body.” (LBPD)
- As of today, “masks will not be required indoors (but will still be strongly recommended) at LBUSD schools.” The District remembered that March 12 actually marks “exactly two years since the global pandemic forced us to close our schools.” (LB Schools)
