Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Long Beach is in the process of creating a “digital memorial to remember and honor residents who have died from COVID-19.” This move comes after the city logged the 1,000th death of a resident because of the virus. “Of the 1,000 people who died since the start of the pandemic in Long Beach: 84 were aged 18 to 49; 213 were 50 to 64; and 703 were 65 and over.” The city asks that you submit photos of loved ones along with a message in memory of the person. (Long Beach City, Spectrum News 1)
  2. There was a deadly stabbing Monday afternoon near the intersection of Louise Street and Linden Avenue. A short while later, officers located an “abandoned car in an alleyway in the 200 block of E. 56th Street,” which they believe to be the crime scene. If you know anything, please contact Homicide Detectives Adrian Garcia, Juan Carlos Reyes, or Jose Rodriguez at (562) 570-7244. (LBPD)
  3. LBUSD will pay substitute teachers more money. The district is dealing with a substitute teacher shortage and willing to pay extra to lure “substitute teachers, who are not represented by the Teachers Association of Long Beach or another union.” The plan is an hourly increase from $27.47 to $32. “Prospective substitute teachers need to hold a bachelor’s degree and meet the “basic skills requirement” either by providing a standardized test score or by having B’s or better in college-level reading, writing and mathematics courses.” (LB Post)
  4. Update: As we warned last week, the traffic jam off the Port of LB is getting worse. The latest count says that there are 70 cargo ships waiting for their turns to get into a berth. However, even then there are problems. There is a “shortage of trucks and drivers to pick up goods.” (CBS)
  5. After Saturday, South Street Parkway will be known as Pressburg Parkway. This decision honors neighborhood leader Dan Pressburg who has been active in Deforest Park. You can find the parklet at the corner of South Street and Jaymills Avenue. Best of all, Dan Pressburg is still alive and will be able to enjoy this honor. (LB Post)
