Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- LBUSD has 272 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of these, 252 are students, 19 are employees, and one is a vendor. Schools with the highest numbers of reported infections are Cubberly and Newcomb. Schools without any reported infections are Marshall and Cabrillo. In related news, the LAUSD will require students 12 and older to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Student athletes must be fully vaccinated by October 31, remaining students have until December 19. (LBUSD, LBReport, LB Post)
- If you have something to say about the future of the Long Beach Citizens Police Complaint Commission, the people in charge want to hear it. There will be a listening session next week, Thursday on Zoom. A second session takes places in-person at Browning HS a week later. Criticism has included the inability of the Commission to affect any change. (LB Post)
- The Best of Long Beach 2021 votes are being tallied. Preliminary results show that the Pow Wow Art Collective, DJ Steven Andrew, Fine Artist Eddie Jelinet, Local Band Boy Called Cute, the Fingerprints Record Shop, Photographer Amanda Holzhauer, Caterer Primal Alchemy, Barber Gabi at Blackraven Parlour, Attorney Kaitlin Kellogg, Bartender Conor at Poor Richards, Fitness Coach Cristoffer Hansen at ICONIX, Community Leader Justin Rudd, Dentist Greg Campbell, Dog Walker Shore Doggs, Eyebrow Artist Larissa at Wax N Blush, Hair Stylist Stephany van Stone at London Lights, Real Estate Agent Danielle Fehmel, Social Media Influencer Brian Addison, Teacher Narong Ngeth at Hamilton Middle School, Barista Breezy at Coffee Drunk, Tattoo Artist Kari Barba at Outer Limits, Mental Health Provider Ethel Daniels, Team Coach Blake Lovato at Millikan HS, and Yoga Instructor Nicole Bushong are leading the pack in their respective niches. - LBPD Chief Robert Luna intends to retire in December. He has been in his position since 2014. Mayor Robert Garcia noted that he had “served with him since my early days as mayor and he’s been an incredible partner and friend.” Critics point out that Chief Luna leaves behind a surge in shootings, a de-funded anti-gang unit, and approximately 250 de-funded officer positions. (City of LB, LBReport)
- The Long Beach Rescue Mission is asking residents to step up and volunteer. There are openings in all areas. Examples include the thrift store, kitchen, learning center, chapel, and mentorship program. (LB Local News)
