Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- A bicyclist was killed Saturday morning, a little after midnight, at Anaheim Street and Coronado Avenue. A 2009 Toyota Corolla driven by a Glendale resident collided with a 32-year-old bicyclist. Officers explained that the cyclist “was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Anaheim Street,” while the driver was driving westbound on Anaheim. The driver remained on the scene and officers say “neither distracted driving, impaired driving nor speed is believed to be factors in the collision.” (LBPD Blotter)
- Which are the top-ranked LBUSD high schools? We learned on Saturday that the top-ranked Long Beach Unified School District facility, with a 100% graduation rate, is “CAMS – California Academy of Math and Science – which ranked as the No. 2 high school in California and No. 15 in the nation.” The Sato Academy of Math and Science came in as #12 in the state and McBride as #53. “Wilson, Long Beach Poly and Millikan each ranked within the top 500 high schools in California.” (LB Post)
- Public health officials warned Friday that it looks like COVID-19 “community transmission moves from low to medium in the coming days.” Although this upgrade will likely not lead to a renewal of health mandates, it could act as the proverbial canary in the coal mine. “The city’s positivity rate was at 7.7%, up from 6.8% the week before.” Officials say they will not know the full impact of this increase until two weeks from now. (Press-Telegram)
- Memorial Day is coming on May 30. The Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach will host a ceremony at the United States National Submarine Memorial West at 11 a.m. Another ceremony is taking place at 11 a.m. at the Lakewood Veterans Memorial Plaza in Del Valle Park on Woodruff Avenue. Forest Lawn will hold a virtual Memorial Day event at 11 a.m. on its Facebook page. (Patch, OC Breeze, Forest Lawn)
- Mark your calendars! The LAWineFest is coming back to the City on June 4 and 5. Festivities are at the Harry Bridges Memorial Park next to the Queen Mary. “Festgoers (have) an amazing opportunity to be introduced to at least 50-plus established and newer wineries each pouring a number of varietals, several breweries, ciders and much more while supporting a great cause in the Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club,” the event director said.
