Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. There was a fatal hit-and-run on Wednesday near PCH and Harbor Avenue. The woman “had been walking in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a 2002 Toyota Avalon.” The driver abandoned the car some blocks away on Santa Fe Avenue. If you have any information, please contact detectives at 562-570-7355. (KTLA)
  2. This is a follow-up to the developing story of the man who was fatally shot in a parking lot near Rosie’s Dog Beach. The man was a performer who “practiced at the beach every Tuesday night.” A witness saw a car driving back and forth, with the motorist being “a little agitated.” During an altercation, occupants opened fire and killed the performer. (NBC)
  3. We learned on Wednesday that the La Esquinita Mexican Grill is a family-owned restaurant that has been open for about six months and already dealt with three break-ins. Windows have been shattered, men broke in, rummaged through the freezer, looked for a safe, and left. If you want to join others in the community and show them some love, head down to 755 West Willow Street, where the staff continues to make and serve the dishes that make La Esquinita a local favorite. (ABC)
  4. The city wants to build 35 tiny homes and convert another motel to shelter space, but it wants to do it on the state’s dime. The City Council voted on Tuesday to apply for $45 million as part of the Project Homekey Initiative. “If the city receives the funding it’s seeking, it could add between 100 and 120 rooms,” the city’s homeless services bureau manager explained. (LB Post)
  5. Sunday, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., there is going to be a “Paddle for Peace to support Ukraine” event taking place next to the Leeway Sailing Center. “Attendees will have an opportunity to sign support posters and a message board. We will also be creating a large human peace sign in the sand, and the program will culminate with a symbolic dove release.” After the beach event, those with canoes, kayaks, or paddleboards will hit the water for a couple of hours around Alamitos Bay.
