📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Early on Sunday morning, the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) responded to the 1000 block of Gardenia Avenue. They found a “two-story, two-unit backhouse” on fire and rescued an individual from the first-floor unit. First responders took the patient to the hospital. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the first-floor unit; however, the second-floor occupant left to stay with family. (Long Beach Post)
  2. Just after 7 p.m. on Sunday, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) responded to the 400 block of East Market Street because of a stabbing. The victim explained that his 58-year-old roommate stabbed him after the two got into an argument. Officers arrested the suspect on the scene and booked him “for one count of assault with a deadly weapon. Bail was set at $30,000.” (LBPD)
  3. On Sunday, the City of Long Beach added 60 warming beds to its Multi-Service Center at 1301 West 12th Street. They will be available to our homeless neighbors until March 5. However, these beds are only available between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. Center staff will remove them during the day for operations. (City of Long Beach)
  4. Sadly, for one individual, these accommodations came too late. Officials say that one person experiencing homelessness died from exposure on Friday. On Thursday, more than 100 people huddled together to stay dry under the awning of the Billie Jean King Main Library at 200 West Broadway. The Community Hospital winter shelter has been at capacity since December 19, and the Silverado Park shelter setup stalled. Officials said that its usual 530 beds went down to 300 “due to funding for various emergency housing programs ending.” (Long Beach Post)
  5. Could we be in for new cargo delays this year? We learned on Monday that carriers are canceling trips “to prop up prices,” which could lead to cargo delays. Retailers, some of whom paid around $20,000 to ship a container during the pandemic, worry about “delays due to plummeting demand.” However, a shipping conference is scheduled in Long Beach this week, where insiders expect shippers to be “out for blood.” (gCaptain)
