Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- Stink update: Yep. It still stinks. Also, some residents “began noticing discolored, foul-smelling water coming out of their drains.” Officials are now dealing with the problem by spraying a biodegradable deodorizer into the Dominguez Channel “to help diminish the smell.” Next, they’ll install “a dozen aeration devices.” (KTLA)
- Sedative update: The LBPD and FD have been using the sedative Midazolam (Versed) to help “someone's who's acting extremely agitated, very sweaty, super human strength, incoherent.” Critics say that the drug is unsafe. The FD counters by stating that they can use “a total of 20 milligrams of Midazolam in the field.” (ABC)
- Are sanctioned homeless encampments the answer to impromptu tent cities springing up across the City? Services officials are said to be “in the beginning stages of studying the possibility,” which is already a thing in Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland. They may have more clarity at their next meeting in early November. (LB Post)
- There was a high-speed chase that ended in LB. The California Highway Patrol made the arrest in a cul-de-sac near 12th Street. Before that, the driver endangered other motorists and pedestrians in Garden Grove and surrounding cities. (ABC 7)
- City Attorney Charles Parkin intends to retire. Assistant City Attorney Dawn McIntosh seems like the replacement whom everyone likes. Endorsements include the retiring CA, the Mayor, a former mayor, and two city council incumbents. (LBReport)
