MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Manhattan Beach police will hold a DUI checkpoint Friday, July 18, to deter drunk and impaired drivers, the department announced Wednesday.

Police did not say where or what time the checkpoint would take place. But the department said in a statement on social media that people should "think twice" about driving under the influence.

Officers will be looking for people driving drunk, buzzed, high, overmedicated, without a license or with a suspended license, according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

"A DUI is 100% preventable," the department said in a statement. "Designate a sober driver or use a ride share service to get home safely. See a drunk driver? Call 9-1-1"

Funding for DUI checkpoints is provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The grant money is awarded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — a federal agency that says its mission is to save lives and prevent injuries on the road through actions that include education, research and enforcement.
