Updated at 9:55 p.m. — A "catastrophic equipment failure'' caused an outage Friday night that left 65,000 customers without power in the Long Beach, Cerritos and La Mirada areas, some for more than 2 1/2 hours, a Southern California Edison official said.
The outage began around 6 p.m. "as a result of a catastrophic equipment failure at our Del Amo substation,'' said Maureen Brown of Southern California Edison. Full service was restored around 8:40 p.m., Brown said. "We are continuing to evaluate and identify the causes of the failure,'' Brown said.
