Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. An elder abuse victim has died. The 74-year-old man “succumbed to his injuries” on Friday. The incident itself dates back to April 25 around 2:07 p.m., when the LBPD was dispatched to the 5100 block of LB Boulevard. There, they found “an unresponsive male victim inside a residence and a female victim outside. Both victims had critical wounds to their necks.” The suspect, the man’s 30-year-old daughter, “is currently in custody with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and is being held on $2,000,000 bail.” (LBPD)
  2. Update on Scaffold Collapse: On Saturday, we talked about the steel scaffolding collapse near the new fire station. We learned Friday that four workers were affected by the accident, but only one required hospitalization. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation. (NBC)
  3. The LBPD booked a 32-year-old man “on (one) count of prohibited possessor in possession of ammunition, one count of prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, one count of carrying a loaded firearm and one count of carrying a concealed firearm. His bail was set at $500,000.” Officers located him Wednesday around noon near 9th Street and Pacific Avenue. The East Division was initially looking for the suspect in connection with an April 29 petty theft report (stolen bicycle) near the 700 block of Stanley Avenue. (LBPD Blotter)
  4. On Tuesday, the City Council has the opportunity to approve eight new businesses licenses for cannabis dispensaries. They “will be set aside for less-wealthy business owners trying to break into the industry.” If council members choose to approve them, the city will have 40 legal pot shops. Because finding suitable properties is difficult, there’s a plan to reduce or change mandatory buffer zones. (LB Post)
  5. Do you have a soft spot for red wriggler worms? Is this the year when you are going to try composting at home? The city wants to help! Mark your calendar for a Composting At Home Workshop on June 11. (LB Recycles)
