Elderly Man's Death In Long Beach Investigated As Homicide: LBPD

Originally reported as a possible suicide, homicide detectives said the man's death was not self-inflicted.

LONG BEACH, CA — Homicide detectives in Long Beach are investigating the death of a 72-year-old man that was originally reported as a possible suicide, authorities announced.

At about 8:22 p.m. on Nov.1, Long Beach Police Department received reports of a possible suicide in the 4700 block of Greenmeadow Road. When officers arrived, they found an elderly man lying inside his residence with a gunshot wound in his upper body that appeared to be self-inflicted.

The man was declared dead at the scene, authorities said. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

Homicide detectives and the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner responded to the scene to investigate. Despite original beliefs that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, investigators determined it was not and classified the man's death as a homicide.

"Homicide detectives are investigating the motive and circumstances leading up to the shooting and are working to identify a possible suspect," LBPD said in a statement.
