The latest on what's happening in Long Beach, delivered straight to your inbox.

Hey, neighbors! Sylvia here with today's edition of the Long Beach Daily.
Febreze doesn’t conquer the stink. Also, neighborhoods say “no, thank you” to empty containers. Finally, ocean view these days means a vista of container ships anchored near the coast.
The Daily is made possible by local business, The Appliance Coach.

Cool with periods of sun. High: 72 Low: 53.
Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- Stink update: There are now calls for Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency for the stench-ridden Carson Dominguez Channel that is also affecting LB neighborhoods. At this time, 200 residents have moved into hotels and 140 are on hotel waiting lists. Business owners spray Febreze, but it won’t do much good. With the deodorizer having been sprayed since Friday, yesterday the bubblers were supposed to go in. Even so, “it could take three to five days to notice, and smell, the difference.” (NBC)
- Do you ever wonder what happens to the shipping containers once they are finally offloaded at the port and emptied? They have to make room for the next ones, right? Well, it appears that they are being dumped in neighborhoods surrounding the area. Trucking companies will store them in their lots until they reach capacity. The overage ends up “along Anaheim Street in front of some people’s homes.” (CBS)
- Speaking of the port, the jam continues to get worse. Right now, there are 100 ships waiting to get into the ports of LB and L.A. Before the pandemic, a normal wait pattern would include 17 ships at any one time. Toy making insiders predict “some toy prices to double by next year.” (ABC)
- There was a hit-and-run on Saturday that resulted in the death of an adult male. Occurring near Willow Street and Myrtle Avenue, a red sedan struck a 65-year-old pedestrian who was crossing. The sedan fled the scene. If you have any information, contact Detective K. Johansen or Detective K. Myers of the LBPD’s Collision Investigation Detail at (562)570-5130. (LB Local News)
- The Rock Bottom Brewery was a staple for the local nightlife and daytime lunch crowds on Ocean Boulevard and Pine Avenue. It lasted for 23 years. However, in spite of its popularity, the brewery could not survive COVID and closed in May 2020. There’s now a new tenant that’s ready to fill the void. Solita Tacos & Margaritas, a Mexican restaurant, is opening up shop. The menu is Baja-style with charro-cooking inspirations. The goal is to open up by April. (LB Post)
