β° Daylight Saving Time Poll! π€
Daylight saving time begins on March 12. According to history, we can thank entomologist George Hudson for coming up with the idea in 1895. Implementation took place in 1918 to save resources and extend the work day during wartime. In 1966, daylight saving time became the law of the land, but states could opt out. So far, only Hawaii and Arizona have done so. Now, dueling studies point to the successes and failures of the practice. Where do you stand on the issue? So far, 64% donβt like daylight saving time, while 35.1% do. Only 0.9% donβt care one way or the other.
π° Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- Why did a woman start fires inside the Dollar Tree at 1840 Long Beach Boulevard on Sunday afternoon? The Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) responded to the store a little after lunch and put out the flames in a record eight minutes. The woman, who is only described as being in her early 40s, βwas located near the site and detained.β Nobody reported injuries, but the store lost some inventory. (Long Beach Post)
- The area around Long Beach Polytechnic High School at 1600 Atlantic Avenue became the scene of two shootings Sunday evening. A suspect shot a man around 9:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Locust Avenue; the victim didnβt want to cooperate with the police. Next came a call around 11:30 p.m. regarding a shooting at Pasadena Avenue and Hill Street. In this case, the suspect is βanother male adult suspect who is known to the victim.β (Patch)
- A K9 officer made quick work of a fleeing suspect in an attempted murder on Friday. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) responded to the 1000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, where officers found a stabbing victim. They noticed the suspect, who ran away through an alley. This is when the K9 came in. The pup assisted with the apprehension, and the 33-year-old man βwas booked on one count of attempted murder and one count of resisting arrest.β (LBPD)
- Look to the southwest of the Long Beach International Gateway Bridge and envision a 400-acre Pier Wind facility. Then, look into the (far) distance to the offshore wind farms that are currently in federal waters in Northern California. This is the proposal that the Port of Long Beach presented late last month, to have a facility that will build βthe worldβs largest floating offshore wind turbine systemsβ and ready them for towing to the offshore wind farms. Port officials intend to finish a conceptual design of the project this year. (Offshore Wind)
- If you routinely take the 151 bus, read on! Long Beach Transit put some detours into place Monday. They affect bus stops on 4th Street between Elm Street and Alamitos Avenue. These detours will likely stay in place until February 27. βSigns will be posted directing customers to alternative boarding locations.β (Long Beach Transit)
