Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. There was a building fire at 411 East 10th Street, which is near St. Mary Medical Center. The blaze started around 11 a.m. on Sunday and was knocked down by 30 firefighters in about 15 minutes. The building was empty at the time. (LB Post)
  2. Will you soon have to add gas tanks to the list of car parts you have to replace? You already know that catalytic converter theft is a constant. We learned Sunday that “thieves are going to dangerous lengths to avoid the price at the pump: drilling holes directly into gas tanks and letting the fuel leak out.” If someone does steal your gas and damages the tank in the process, you might be out $1,500 for repairs. (NBC)
  3. The Bottoms Up Tavern continues to make headlines. On Saturday, a group of protesters “gathered for a march and rally with people holding banners and posters calling for Bottoms Up Tavern to be boarded up and shut down, claiming the customers who visit there have seriously and negatively impacted the neighborhood.” This bar is tied to the hit-and-run suspect who is believed to have crashed into an apartment building on March 1. (KTLA)
  4. Business has been brisk at the LB Port. “Last month was the busiest February on record at the Port of Long Beach, with 3.2% more 20-foot equivalent units moved compared to the same month in 2021.” In addition, the LB and L.A. Ports reported “a combined 64% decline in aging cargo” on Sunday. (My News LA)
  5. The inaugural Craft Beer LB Homebrew Invitational is scheduled to take place Saturday. The picturesque Rancho Los Cerritos will serve as the backdrop for the “45 homebrewers hailing from homebrew clubs across the Southland, including the Long Beach Homebrewers, OC Mashups and the Latino-led SoCal Cerveceros.” “General admission tickets cost $35 and include unlimited pours from both the professional breweries and homebrewers.” (The HiLo)
