📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) What’s happening with the rebuilding of Fire Station 9? The Planning Commission agreed to the proposal that would place a “two-story, 12,780-square-foot station . . . at the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and Randolph Place.” The City Council may vote on it early next year; construction “could take as long as three years,” and there is a need to locate funding for the project. Estimated to run “between $13 million and $20 million,” we learned on Friday that only about $9.2 million have been set aside so far. (Long Beach Post)
2) Long Beach elementary school students aren’t the only ones sweating in the sweltering heat. We learned on Thursday that CSULB fine arts students have similar complaints. “Classrooms were seeing temperatures upwards of 90, 95, even 98 degrees at times,” a senior explained. Besides that, “parts of the ceiling have been falling.” The CSULB school president said she hopes that “advocating with all of you to our elected representatives, that the CSU System and our campus can secure the necessary resources to build and renovate facilities.” (ABC)
3) The Millikan football saga continues. On September 23, we learned that the team forfeited four wins, and the team’s offensive coordinator was named interim coach. On Thursday, the team reversed its decision and reinstated its head coach. “Millikan can still make the CIF Southern Section playoffs if it finishes in the top three in the Moore League and earns one of the league’s three automatic playoff berths.” (Patch, Press-Telegram)
4) The Hangar is quickly becoming known as the place to be. A case in point is Los Angeles Magazine’s Whiskey Festival on October 26. The event is planned at 4150 McGowen Street between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., featuring “tasty appetizers, live music, and, above all, dozens of whiskeys to try.” (L.A. Magazine)
5) Mark your calendars! The Food Finders’ annual fundraising event will be October 15 at Cal State LB. It will have a Mardi Gras vibe with “live entertainment, an auction, Tableaux vivants (or 'living pictures,') and a Mystere box drawing.” The event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. If you are unfamiliar with the organization, consider that Food Finders recovers “more than 1 million pounds of food a month, and that is turned around and given to nonprofit partners.” (Subscription/Long Beach Post)
