Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. The Transit Board of Directors voted Tuesday to “let students attending K-12 schools and community colleges in the city to ride for free in an 18-month pilot program.” At this point, the Transit staff believes that the LB program will start in “two to three months.” Transit officials anticipate a loss of $3.5 million, which will be paid for in federal funding.   2. The City is announcing that it will begin offering COVID-19 vaccines to kids between the ages of 5 and 11. They will require a parental consent form. The vaccine will be a “a lower dose of the Pfizer vaccine than offered to those 12+ but will also require a two-dose course with 21 days between first and second doses.” Parents can make appointments starting Thursday.   3. Where should you buy gasoline? According to GasBuddy, you can pay $3.95 per gallon regular at the ARCO at 1001 Redondo Avenue. At the Sam’s Club on 7480 Carson Street, it’s $3.99. At Food 4 Less on 6700 Cherry Avenue, the cost is $4.09. (GasBuddy)
  4. LB has noted an increase in sexually transmitted infections. As noted by ABC on Tuesday, “Long Beach has historically had some of the highest rates of HIV and sexually transmitted infections in California.” According to the last-available reports, from 2015 to 2019, “chlamydia increased by 12%, gonorrhea by 59%, and congenital syphilis by 613%.” (ABC)
