Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- Grand Prix road closures are upon us! They will be enforced 9-22, 9-24, 9-25, 9-26, and 9-27. Unless you absolutely have to be on Shoreline Drive, Seaside Way, the Queensway Bridge ramps, or Pine Avenue, avoid the area. If you can’t do that, note that the Grand Prix will have tiered closures that differ by time and day. (LB Post)
- Did you feel it? The magnitude 4.2 earthquake with its epicenter near Carson sure got my attention Friday evening. Lucy Jones, the expert of all things quaking, notes that the “epicenter was just north of the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.” She goes on to say that earthquakes of this size occur in Southern California about every two months.” Earlier this week, some folks felt a little rumble that stemmed from a magnitude 3.0 earthquake near San Fernando. If you want to prepare for “the big one” or see what this might look like for Long Beach, head over to LAist. (LB Post, CBS Local, LAist)
- Update: Remember the shooting on September 4 that took place in the 900 block of Park Circle? U.S. Marshals took a 29-year-old LB resident into custody even though he had absconded to Iowa. Authorities allege he is a suspect in the double murder. Detectives do not believe that the suspect knew the victims before the shooting took place. (ABC 7)
- A 41-year-old San Bernardino man was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison. He pleaded guilty to “two counts of interference with commerce by robbery.” His robbery spree involved “28 fast food restaurants and retail stores,” some of which are in Long Beach, but netted him only a total of $3,853. (Justice Department)
- Mayor Robert Garcia, from his personal account, tweeted his support to every family impacted by COVID-19. This message comes on the heels of the announcement that Long Beach has officially counted 1,000 resident deaths because of the virus. (@RobertGarcia)
