Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- The City’s $4/hour hazard pay mandate for large grocery stores stands. A federal judge dismissed the California Grocers Association's claims and affirmed the City Council’s ordinance to pay grocery store workers the added premium for 120 days. You may remember that Kroger took this as a hint to close two stores in LB. (Reuters)
- In its latest directives, the LBUSD’s superintendent notes that all staff members must show proof of vaccination or take weekly COVID-19 tests. The elected school board has not weighed in. (LBReport)
- The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association’s contract with LB is ending, and locally owned companies in the area worry. The infusion of funds paid for private security, façade improvements, events, and public art. During the pandemic, this business community lost Elise’s Tea Room, FreeSpirit Yoga, Jumper’s Jungle, Averyboo Arts, Recreation Fitness, Payday Advance, Mixx Kitchen, Bixby’s Brooklyn Deli and Georgie’s Place. - Steven Estrada, a member of the Communist Party USA, has announced his candidacy for LB’s City Council, District 1. He says that “it’s time working people make their own history.” He opposes incumbent Mary Zendejas. However, he may be facing an uphill battle. Zendejas has raised more than $40,000 while Estrada received contributions totaling $2,322. (StevenEstradaD1, LB Post)
- The LB Health Department collaborates with UCLA on a study gauging the effectiveness of a mobile clinic versus referrals to services. Two study groups will be tracked for 26 weeks. Mobile units are equipped with medications for opioid addiction, HIV treatment and prevention, sexually transmitted diseases, Hepatitis C, and vaccinations. (Random Lengths News)
