🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. We asked, how do you celebrate? You responded. 44.7% of you celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 30.6% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 1.2% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 23.5% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude. Thank you for participating!

📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

1) The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) announced on Friday that officers made arrests in the August 21st case of a fatal shooting in the 6700 block of Harbor Avenue. The victim was a 48-year-old Los Angeles resident. The suspects are 26 and 27 years old. One was arrested near the 500 block of East 64th Street and “booked for one count of murder.” the other suspect was located in the 200 block of East Bort Street and “booked for one count of accessory to murder.” (LBPD)

2) The LBPD made another arrest on Monday. This time, they arrested five burglary suspects. The crime took place on October 18 in a business near the 6400 block of PCH. At that time, an estimated $13,000 were stolen. The suspects are residents of Fontana, Los Angeles, and Ontario. They range in age from juveniles to 21 years. (LBPD)

3) The City’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Terrace Theater Plaza is scheduled for December 5. We learned on Thursday that officials are working on making the downtown area safer for visitors. Steps taken include “lighting up more streets and alleyways, tightening up the operations at construction sites, and speeding up the city’s ability to sweep away homeless encampments.” Officials say that what is needed is “better responsiveness to not allow these encampments to grow and grow and grow and get worse and dirty.” (Long Beach Business Journal)

4) Do you remember the Red Room at 1227 East 4th Street? Well, it closed. However, we learned that the Red Room location will reopen as a rebranded Baby Gee at the end of this month! “We’re going to be serving really great cocktails. But we’re also going to be a place where people can grab a shot and a beer,” the new owners said, hinting that they will keep the dive bar appeal alive. While the pool table will be a thing of the past, there will be DJs spinning vinyl records. (The HiLo)

5) The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) hosted an art contest. Middle as well as high school students from the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) participated. Entries were to incorporate the theme: “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.” Last week, the LBUSD released the names of the winners. For grades six to nine, the winners are Taylor Williams from Wilson High School, Maggie Carter from Marshall Academy of the Arts, and Sophia Estrada from Rogers Middle School. From grades ten to 12, the winners are Chloe Rinker from Wilson High School, Kylie Escalante also from Wilson High School, and Jacquelyn Rodriguez from Renaissance High School. Well done! (LBUSD)
