🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 48.1% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 25.9% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 3.7% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 22.9% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) At 1:36 p.m. on Wednesday, an SUV and a Metro train collided near 3rd Street and Long Beach Boulevard. Reportedly, both were headed south when the SUV “attempted to make a left turn onto Third Street and struck the train.” By 2:30 p.m., downtown Long Beach train service was back to normal. (Long Beach Post)
2) There was a fatal assault on Wednesday evening in the 7400 block of East Willow Street, which is near El Dorado Park. Officers “discovered an unconscious adult male . . . (who) succumbed to his injuries.” The PD has not released the manner of death. (Long Beach Police Department)
3) Project Roomkey, which provided 202 rooms spread over three motels locally, ended in September. On Thursday, we learned that the City of Long Beach voted to fund the lease for 26 rooms at the Hyland Inn to “house folks who lack permanent shelter” over the next six months. The city also still owns several former motels it bought under Project Homekey. (paywall/Press-Telegram)
4) The city is moving forward with its plan to improve the Colorado Lagoon and Marina Vista Park. On Monday, you have the opportunity to find out what’ll happen at a virtual meeting scheduled for 5:30 PM. Information offered includes details on “critical local traffic impacts (and) construction timelines.” (City of LB)
5) Are you in the mood to do some Christmas shopping? How about this Saturday at the Rancho Los Alamitos? The venue at 6400 East Bixby Hill Road hosts a holiday shopping and artisan event that runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There, you can find one-of-a-kind items from Yesmean Rihbany, The Spicy Kitchen, and Sandy Winkler.
