Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Wilson HS Gender Neutral Locker Room Update: In December, we discussed the Wilson HS plan for gender-neutral locker rooms that were part of its $23 million pool redo. On Friday, LBUSD Superintendent Jill Baker announced that “the district is pausing development plans” to “seek more community input.” Initially, the District explained that the gender-neutral locker rooms were a go after relying on focus groups with students. However, “aquatic athletes and coaches complained that they weren’t consulted or asked for their opinion.” (Patch, LB Post)
  2. Last month, we talked about Miles Nevin running for City Council in District 3. He had received endorsements from numerous “neighborhood organizations, small business owners, and individuals.” On Wednesday, he withdrew. He explained that he will instead be “taking on a leadership role in our campus-wide effort to reimagine our campus non-profit organizations into a new system of programs and services that best serves our students.” (Patch, Press-Telegram)
  3. The LBPD announced Friday that it is aware of “a recent increase in commercial burglaries and vandalismdowntown. At this time, the PD doesn’t believe the incidents are related. The department will deploy “additional patrol and investigative resources in the business corridors in the area.” Business owners are encouraged to install lighting and video surveillance. (@LBPD)
  4. A man was shot Thursday after 2 p.m. on the 900 block of Gardenia Avenue (Hellman neighborhood). “The shooting suspect was last seen driving westbound on 10th Street.” Gang detectives have joined the investigation. (LB News)
  5. The Hideaway at 4137 East Anaheim is now a Colombian restaurant called Selva. Dishes include “arepas, ceviches, and a smoked chicken with ají salsa.” After opening Friday, it maintains hours Wednesday through Sunday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. (LA Easter)
