🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 43.2% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 27.3% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 2.3% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 27.3% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.

📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

1) Los Angeles isn’t the only city susceptible to hoax threats against its schools. On Saturday afternoon, someone made an anonymous Instagram threat against Hughes Middle School on California Avenue. Though the Long Beach Police Department is investigating, it doesn’t believe the threat to be credible. As a precaution, the school’s principal brought school safety officers to the campus on Monday. It's interesting to note that the party alerting the school used the new Say Something reporting system. (Long Beach Post)

2) On Saturday evening, at 8:33 p.m., the Police Department received reports of shots fired in the 1000 block of Lewis Avenue. Nobody was hit by bullets. “Officers learned a male suspect drove down the street, fired shots, and fled the area.” Investigators did find casings. (Long Beach Police Department)

3) Beginning November 28, there will be traffic detours around Eliot and Colorado streets. The city is going forward with its plans to build an open channel connecting the Colorado Lagoon to Marine Stadium. Completion of the project is planned for 2024. Besides an improvement in water quality and the goal to restore habitats, residents will also receive “new bike and walking paths, a public viewing area, two vehicle bridges and the reconfigured park area with new sports fields.” (Long Beach Post)

4) The Port of Long Beach continues its commitment to sustainable operations. We learned on Monday that the LB Port is in talks with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to develop “a green and digital shipping corridor between Singapore and the San Pedro Bay port complex.” The goal is to support “deployment of low- and zero-carbon ships.” Because Singapore is a significant player in trans-Pacific shipping, this is a major development. (American Journal of Transportation)

5) Are you a parent who's trying to understand the byzantine elements of the individualized education program (IEP) process? There’s help. The Long Beach Unified School District will host an IEP workshop on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Browning High School, 2180 Obispo Avenue. The district will provide childcare and interpretation services. (Long Beach USD)
