DOWNEY, CA — Several lanes along the Santa Ana (5) Freeway will be closed for a few days starting Monday as part of a pavement rehabilitation project by Caltrans.

The closures are scheduled to take place overnight from June 30 to the morning of July 3, according to Caltrans.

At least three lanes in both directions of the I-5 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. to allow crews to work on a 6.5-mile stretch of the freeway from the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway to north of Atlantic Boulevard, according to Caltrans.

"When completed, the project will extend the life of the pavement, impede roadway deterioration, and improve the ride quality for motorists traveling on I-5," Caltrans said in a statement Wednesday.

Those improvements may include replacing broken concrete slabs, treating the roadway with an asphalt concrete overlay to preserve the surface, new signal upgrades, sign replacements, new striping and median barrier upgrades.

The project to improve the I-5 began in 2023 and is expected to be fully completed sometime in the fall.
