🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 45.1% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 29.4% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 2% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 23.5% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
1) Election results: Counting is still ongoing. As of now, outgoing Mayor Robert Garcia will represent District 42 in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the race for Long Beach mayor, Rex Richardson is in the lead. For the 3rd District, Kristina Duggan is ahead, and for the 5th District, Megan Kerr holds a narrow lead. In the 9th District, Joni Ricks-Oddie has a comfortable lead. Maria Isabel Lopez is ahead in the Long Beach Unified School District Board race, and Robert Luna is in the lead for sheriff. Voters favored the Long Beach Water and Gas Consolidation, the establishment of a Police Oversight Commission, the bond measure for the schools, a realignment of election dates, and the charter amendment to let the Board of Supervisors remove an elected sheriff. Sunny Zia is ahead in Community College District area 3, while Virginia Baxter is ahead in area 5. John Allen is in the lead for Board of Directors of the Water Replenishment District. (Long Beach Post)
2) The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) recovered two French Bulldog puppies that were stolen from the 1200 block of East 7th Street last Thursday. “Officers determined a male suspect entered the property, removed the puppies from the kennel, and fled the scene.” When the suspect attempted to sell the dogs, officers recovered them. Two suspects, one 18 and one 19 years old, were “booked for burglary, grand theft of an animal, and possession of a controlled substance.” The puppies are back home. (Check out the photos; these dogs are adorable!) (LBPD)
3) On Saturday, in the early morning hours, a naked man was lying in the street near Gardenia Avenue and 8th Street. The LBPD responded, and “witnesses told police that the suspects, who appeared to be between the ages of 16 to 20, kicked the man roughly 200 times and stomped on his head about 10 times.” There is no information about the victim’s current condition. What we do know is that the police received calls regarding the group of suspects earlier when they were around 10th and 11th streets “attempting to fight others, damage vehicles, throw trash cans and threaten to shoot at vehicles.” (Long Beach Post)
4) Twelve Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) recruits were injured in a live fire training exercise on Tuesday. An explosion occurred unexpectedly at the 2249 Argonne Avenue training facility. One of the trainees was hospitalized. The LBFD canceled training exercises until they determine what happened. (Patch)
5) The Habit Burger Grill is opening a new location at 4542 PCH! Opening day is November 16, but if you’re a member of the CharClub and have the mobile app on your phone, you can participate in “exclusive pre-opening VIP events.” There are plenty of free meals to be won! (QSR Magazine)
