Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- The LBUSD officially notified parents that for the 2021-2022 school year, there is an independent study option for kids who will not return to campus for in-person instruction. It will take place via the Beach Independent Study program. Students with IEPs or 504 Plans may not be able to participate. (LB Schools)
- During the first three weeks of August, Long Beach had 16 shootings. One critic did the math and determined that the First District “had higher shooting homicides per capita than Chicago.” (District 1 is represented by Mary Zendejas and includes West 20th Street, Atlantic Avenue, East 3rd Street, West Broadway, and West Ocean Blvd.) (LBReport)
- Restauration was the LB eatery that dominated the news during the worst months of the pandemic. Openly defying pandemic rules and staying open when others followed the rules and closed, the venue eventually closed for good in April. Now, the building that includes 2708 East 4th Street is listed for $2.3 million. (LB Post)
- The LBPD located an at-risk missing person, Tasha June Merola. She disappeared Saturday from the 4700 block of Sunfield Avenue and was located Sunday at a Lakewood store. Christopher James Timmons is still missing. You may remember that he was last seen Thursday in the 1000 block of Linden Avenue. (LBPD, #2)
- Happy Sundays is returning to the Zaferia District. Scheduled for this coming Sunday, it involves several local venues such as Alex’s Bar on Anaheim and The Ore Market on Coronado. Plenty of bands are on hand; they include She Wears Black and Widows Gold. (Happy Sundays LBC)
