Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- There’s going to be an ordinance proposal in front of the City Council come Tuesday. It “would require an adult to be supervising a child under the age of 12 to be legally present on a playground in the city.” If passed, it would keep teens and adults off playground equipment, and LBPD officers could begin issuing citations. This ordinance dates back to the City Council’s September discussions, when members said “that vandalism and loitering by people experiencing homelessness or doing drugs were limiting residents’ ability to safely enjoy city playgrounds.” (Long Beach News)
- The ILGA World Conference will take place from Monday through Friday at the Westin Long Beach in downtown. ILGA World is “a federation of more than 1,700 organizations globally that campaign for LGBTQ rights.” Conference organizers expect to welcome about 600 delegates. Interested residents can participate by attending plenary sessions. (Press-Telegram)
- On Wednesday, the California Department of Housing and Community Development officially certified the City’s eight-year general plan housing element update. “The certification will help the city advance its goal of meeting the housing needs of current and future Long Beach residents and providing fair housing options for all.” (Random Lengths News)
- The Poly Badminton Team had a fantastic week! The Moore League hosted finals at Millikan. On Wednesday, Poly’s team bagged the mixed doubles championship! “The Jackrabbits are the first team to win the title since Cabrillo took the trophy home in 2019.” (The562.org)
- At 3 p.m. today, you can join Councilwoman Suely Saro at 411 West Ocean Boulevard in the Civic Chambers. The LBFD will make a presentation and there will be a report from the LBPD’s Office of Constitutional Policing. (Councilwoman Suely Saro)
