(Patch Media)

Morning, people of Long Beach! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.

Let’s hear it for Long Beach Firefighter Paramedics Michael Thurston and Will Montgomery, who saved a couple of dogs. Also, the little Shih Tzu mix that was rescued last week is up for adoption. Finally, the Dominguez Channel still stinks.

The Daily is made possible by local business, The Appliance Coach.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. A shout-out to Long Beach Firefighter Paramedics Michael Thurston and Will Montgomery! After responding to an apartment fire on the 1400 block of East Third Street on Thursday, they rendered first aid to two pit bulls. The doggies were in the apartment and suffered from smoke inhalation. These paramedics not only had a mask fitted for a dog’s snout, but they were able to give oxygen to the pets. Their owner arrived and took them to the vet. (LB Post)
  2. Rescued Shih Tzu mix update: Remember the doggie that swam out to a buoy in the Alamitos Bay last Friday? Rescuers joined forces to get her onto dry land. She’s healthy and has completed her mandatory hold. She is now available for adoption at LB Animal Care Services! (CBS)
  3. Dominguez Channel stink update: No, there aren’t any solutions yet. Even so, the L.A. County Department of Public Works claims that it was “able to reduce the smell by spraying biodegradable deodorizer in the channel.” This might be news to residents in Carson, LB, and now also San Pedro and Wilmington, where the stink is now wafting to. (KCAL 9)
  4. Millikan shooting update: The former LBUSD safety officer appeared in court before Judge Tomson Ong on Friday. The L.A. District Attorney’s office charged him with one count of second-degree murder. However, the defendant didn’t enter a plea and arraignment was postponed until December. (LB Post)
  5. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is joining the 21st century! While in the past, you had to apply for a permit or reservation in person or with a handwritten application, it is now using a fillable online form. Best of all, you can submit it online, get a confirmation of receipt, and upload any other documents you may need to provide. (Patch)
