LONG BEACH, CA — The Long Beach Police Department activated a SWAT team response while attempting to arrest a residential burglary suspect Monday night, according to authorities.

At about 6:26 p.m., LBPD received a report of a burglary at a home in the 2200 block of Santa Fe Avenue. When officers arrived, the residents of the home told police that a man had broken into their home, held them at gunpoint and then fled into a vacant unit nearby.

Police then activated SWAT resources in order to attempt the de-escalate the situation, but the suspect refused to comply with orders to leave the unit, LBPD said.

After hours of attempted negotiations with the barricaded suspect, the police officers decided to deploy tear gas into the residence.

"The suspect attempted to flee at which point officers deployed a 40mm less-lethal round and a K9. After deploying a K9, the suspect was taken into custody," LBPD said in a statement.
