LBUSD Electronic Lock Pilot + Puvungna + A Pool In North LB?

Beginning with two schools, the LBUSD will test electronic lock technology that could lock down a whole campus with a mouse click. Puvungna, a sacred Native American site on the CSULB campus, is creating controversy. Finally, there is a chance that the City Council will talk about building a public pool in the 90805 ZIP code – maybe.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- The LBUSD launches an electronic locks pilot program at Bixby Elementary and Muir K-8. The locks go on classroom doors and doors that open to high-use spaces. It allows for a lock-down in minutes across the entire campus. Jefferson Middle School and Robinson K-8 will get the locks by next fall. (LB School Bonds)
- The Native American Heritage Commission accuses CSULB of bad faith communication about Puvungna, which is a sacred Native American site that is on the campus. (LB Post)
- The 90805 ZIP code might be getting a public pool. Council Members Zendejas, Price, and Austin with Vice Mayor Richardson identified North LB as the area with the least access to a public pool. Therefore, they want to study its establishment at the August 3rd meeting. (LB)
- LB announces its Storefront Reopening and Board-Up Removal (SRBR) Program, which pays qualified business and property owner applicants to remove boarding materials they used to cover windows and storefronts during COVID-19 or last year’s civil unrest. (City of LB)
- In May 2020, police shot a man allegedly armed with a knife on the 710 Freeway. Now, the man’s family is suing the City for violating his civil rights and waiting too long to provide medical care. (CBS Local)
