LBUSD: McBride Earns Career Skill Recognition

Six McBride High School students took home medals at the Regional SkillsUSA Competition, an event showcasing the best career and technical education students in the nation.

The winning students include Monyale West, Gold, Medical Terminology; Isabella Amaya Rojas, Gold, Nurse Assisting; Heaven Jimenez, Desiree Tan and Lorelei Fuller, Gold, Community Service; and Angel Barrera, Bronze, Technical Design. 

The students will compete at the SkillsUSA State Championship next month in Ontario for a chance to move on to the SkillsUSA National Championship. Students will also have the opportunity to network with industry professionals and possibly receive future job offers. 

Since 2016, McBride has partnered with SkillsUSA, a career and technical student organization, to prepare students for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. Students also learn career standards such as ethics and reliability, and “soft skills” such as job interview, resume design and collaboration skills. 

With support from the Long Beach Unified School District Career Pathways Office and state grants, students throughout the years have competed in Medical Terminology, First Aid and CPR, Technical Design, Related Technical Math, Crime Scene Investigation, Nursing Assisting, Community Service, Prepared and Extemporaneous Speech, and other categories.

The SkillsUSA club at McBride is lead by Science Teacher Erica Kelly.
