Megan Lane, senior at Poly High School, earned first place and a $200 prize in the 2022 Long Beach NAACP Black History Month Youth and College Scholars competition. Lane has achieved outstanding accomplishments throughout her educational career including becoming co-chair for the Long Beach Unified School District Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee and a student delegate for the California Association of Student Councils. She also held a three-year internship with Californians for Justice, which supported her passion to improve educational advancement and success for Black students.

Seventeen LBUSD high school students were among the recently announced awardees of the $1,000 Donna Kelly Memorial Scholarship from the Downtown Long Beach Lions Club. The winners include Alaa Shhub, Jason Perez, Tyler Nguyen and Maryam Moujahid Rubio of CAMS; Sylvia Womak, Karla DeAlba, Carlos DeAlba and Vietduke Thai of Poly; Kimberly Johnson, Kelly Diaz-Cervantes and Aracely Asis of Cabrillo; Jesse Quinteres Nunez, Jasmine Padilla, Eryn Cassidy and Virginia Soto Hernandez of Avalon; and Terence Booth and Joseph Pecot of Millikan.
