Sarah Savala, a physical education and dance teacher at Marshall Academy for the Arts, was selected as the recipient of the Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award from the California Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD).

Savala will be recognized for her professional contributions and achievements next month at the 2022 CAHPERD Conference. She previously has earned National Board Certification, the highest professional distinction in teaching.

Savala has taught in the subjects of physical education, health and dance for 22 years. She has been an instructor with Long Beach Unified School District since 2015.

“I feel so humbled and blessed to be honored among my colleagues and peers, who I hold in such high esteem,” Savala said. “I have been an advocate for quality physical education programs throughout my career. I believe that when students are educated with the right tools, they will live a healthy and active life.”

“You are to be commended for your commitment and dedication to quality physical education programs,” CAHPERD President William Potter stated in the award notification letter. “I look forward to celebrating your accomplishments!”
