Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- In the last four months, LBFD paramedics have dispensed midazolam, a sedative, to about 42 people who were deemed violent or combative. This assisted the PD to deal with what they term “agitated delirium.” The goal is to reduce the use of force. However, critics point out that in other cities, there were two fatalities with this method. (LB Post)
- You are considered a low-income LB household if you earn less than $73,100. Moreover, there’s a good chance that you are living in west, central or north LB and spend 30% or more of your income on rent. The City Council intends to fix this and “promote fair housing choices for all.” (LB Local News)
- There’s going to be a new Oktoberfest celebration! Scheduled for two weekends in late October, it will take place at the Scottish Rite Event Center as an outdoor Biergarten event. Enjoy Paulaner Festbier, Hofbrau Oktoberfestbier, Bavarian specialties, bratwurst, and vegan food. Festmeister Hans und Die Sauerkrauts band will provide entertainment. Organizers expect 6,000 attendees. Zum Wohlsein! (The HiLo)
- September is National Preparedness Month and the City of LB wants residents to participate. “It is essential that we build a culture of preparedness to protect ourselves and those around us,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. Look for social media promotions, trivia contests, webinars, and calls to learn CPR and first aid. (City of LB)
- Yesterday was the first day of school for LBUSD students, and most kids were happy, while drivers had a hard time. There were photos taken in front of welcome banners, hugs, and gridlock at Palo Verde Avenue and Spring Street (Millikan), 7th Street between Termino and Park Avenues (Wilson), and Ximeno Avenue.
