Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. On Friday, close to 3:18 a.m., the LBPD dispatched officers to the 1200 block of Locust Avenue. A man explained that he was in a parking lot, got into a verbal altercation with several people, and was subsequently carjacked by “one male suspect and one female suspect (who) approached him, produced a firearm, fired a shot towards the ground, and drove the victim’s vehicle from the scene.” (LBPD)
  2. Saturday evening, at around 9:56 p.m., a vehicle crashed into a house on the 1300 block of Atlantic Avenue. While there were no injuries, the city placed a “Red Unsafe” tag on the residence. The Red Cross assisted the resident who was displaced by the crash. (LB Post)
  3. Could the port finally begin charging the container dwell fees it has waived since October? Maersk said on Thursday that the ongoing congestion at the port may cost the ocean carrier the costly fees. “As of May 26 the Port of Long Beach had a combined 12,189 import containers dwelling nine or more days,” which could qualify for the fee. Of course, remember that carriers will turn around and pass on the fee to shippers. (gCaptain)
  4. Summer is coming – Bellflower Unified is ending school this week – and you might not yet have found something for the kids to do this summer. Fret not! There are some water and beach-themed activities. Examples include the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club’s Summer Program for youngsters from 8 to 18 years, or the Leeway Sailing and Aquatics Center that serves a similar age range. Younger campers might appreciate Aqualand Bay Camp. Another favorite is the Long Beach Junior Crew for those aged 11 and up. (Press-Telegram)
  5. Are you a mural artist? Are you a local professional artist? The city wants to divide up $900,000 among you to “support local arts and cultural organizations” as part of the LB Recovery Act. However, you’re running out of time to apply. The application period closes on June 10. Mural painters have until August 5. (City of LB)
