Long Beach Splits Olympic Sailing Venue With San Pedro
The Olympic committee announced Monday that the South Bay city will host part of the sailing venue.
LONG BEACH, CA — The Olympic committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Games announced today that San Pedro would be splitting sailing with Long Beach.
"Sailing has a long history in our city and San Pedro will shine on the world stage," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement Monday. "We look forward to welcoming the world's best sailors to compete in these exciting events."
Long Beach's Belmont Shore neighborhood was set to host the sailing venue all by itself, but now will share the spotlight with San Pedro, which will host the following at the Port of Los Angeles:

The Port of Los Angeles previously served as the backdrop of the sailing competition during the 1932 Olympics.
Long Beach, which will host several other games such as handball, sport climbing and marathon swimming, will keep men's and women's windsurfing and men's and women's kite.

The decision comes after city councilmember Tim McOsker, who represents the Harbor area, criticized the Olympic committee, LA28, in March for its decision to host sailing in Long Beach as opposed to San Pedro.
"...Instead of some back room where a couple of bros make this decision somewhere, let's do something for the sport, let's do something for the Olympic movement, let's do something for Los Angeles, but most importantly, let's do something for the spectator," McOsker said at the time.
On Monday, following the announcement to have San Pedro serve as the host for sailing, McOsker said he was "grateful" to the LA28 committee and sailing advocates who made this possible.
"I look forward to working with LA28 to ensure that the Games uplift the sports, inspire fans, highlight the immense talent of the athletes, and showcase the very best of the LA Harbor and the City of Los Angeles on the global stage," McOsker said.
Meanwhile, city officials are still exploring the feasibility of connecting San Pedro and Long Beach during the Olympic and Paralympic games by establishing a water taxi.
Another South Bay city, Carson, will be hosting field hockey, rugby, tennis and cycling track during the 2028 games.
