Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- On Tuesday evening at around 6:26 p.m., the LBPD responded to the area of 72nd Place and Ocean Boulevard. What officers referred to as “a negligent discharge with a firearm incident” was a 53-year-old man from Wilmington who, standing on the jetty near the lifeguard station, shot multiple times at the ocean. He “was booked for one count of possession of a firearm and one count of discharging a firearm” but “held on zero-dollar bail.” (LBPD Blotter)
- House of Haven, which is designed to be a meeting point for homeless and at-risk youths, is scheduled to open in May. The facility at 5231 Atlantic Avenue expects to serve “at least 300 youth and young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 annually” with “free showers, food, computer access, meals, clothing, hygiene kits, a small laundry facility, case management, transportation assistance, workshops, education, employment assistance, or just a space to ‘be able to come to lay their head’.” (LB Post)
- Also beginning in May, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation will pay $1.6 million to launch and operate Space Beach. It is a “new job-skills training program set on giving Long Beach youth access to careers in the aerospace industry.” “Several aerospace companies have already signed on to the program, including Virgin Orbit, SpaceX, Boeing, NASA, and others.” The details will be hammered out next Wednesday. (Press-Telegram)
- A citizen-led sting operation led to the Saturday arrest of a 57-year-old man who is said to be a preschool employee. He was arrested “on suspicion of attempting to contact an underage boy for sex” after People v. Preds produced a video that used an “adult decoy who accuses (the man) of agreeing to meet with what he thought was a 14-year-old boy for sex.” The LBPD “said it does not condone citizens taking matters into their own hands.” (LB Post)
- Mark your calendars! This Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library is the place to be. Organizers teach the right way to recycle and even get the kids engaged with games and more. (LB Recycles)
