So far, 32.9% favor more infrastructure investment, 23.3% want federal involvement, 2.7% say faith-based groups need to step up, 6.8% want the military to open its bases, and 30.1% ask for justice system involvement.
📰 Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
1) The Long Beach Police Department announced on Friday that it is on the hunt for the suspect in the sexual battery of a minor. The incident occurred on the 1100 block of East 4th Street. After following the minor, the suspect propositioned, grabbed, and struck him when the victim fought back. Check out the video and drop a dime if you know the suspect. Call Detective Monica Moore at (562) 570-5514 or Detective William Neal at (562) 570-5513. (LBPD)
2) El Dorado Duck Pond Update: We learned on Thursday that the project is a definite go. Look forward to “new wetlands areas around the pond, a new liner for the pond, and repairs to the pedestrian walkways.” The parking lot, where a flat part of concrete is hard to find, will get an upgrade and “an ADA-accessible path that will connect the lot to the new pedestrian trail around the pond.” The city estimates it will be done by November 2023. (Long Beach Post)
3) The city plans to take a proactive approach toward road maintenance. The Public Works Department announced on Thursday that its new Street Maintenance Division program is launching. Crews will be “addressing streets in different council districts every month” and apply a slurry seal and crack seal solution. Mind you, this step is for streets in fairly good shape to extend their lives by five to seven years. It is not for streets riddled with potholes, cracks and missing chunks of asphalt. (LB Public Works)
4) We’re number 50?! As of Tuesday, Long Beach ranks 50th out of 100 as a pet-friendly city. Factors the experts considered were pet budgets, pet wellness and outdoor pet-friendliness. The most pet-friendly city overall is Scottsdale, AZ. In California, it is San Diego in 31st place. At the bottom of the list is Santa Ana. (WalletHub)
5) Mark your calendars! If you are considering adopting a pet from the Long Beach shelter, do it between Friday and August 21. Right now, there’s a “Clear the Shelters $25 adoption fee” in place. Besides that, “NBC4 and Telemundo 52 will pay the $25 adoption fee for the first 50 adoptions.” (NBC)
