In a change from the recent shootings, there’s been a stabbing. Also, how is it that renters are being evicted, but rental assistance money remains unclaimed? Finally, trees are dropping like flies.

Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:

  1. A man was stabbed in the 1900 block of East PCH as he walked to his car at 3:48 a.m. Saturday. LBPD is investigating. (LB Post)
  2. The LB Emergency Rental Assistance Program reopens for landlord and tenant applications. You may be eligible to receive full payment of unpaid rents and utilities from April 2020 to the present. So far, 1,690 landlords/utility providers have received $12.1 million. The rest of the $64 million program remains unclaimed. (City of LB)
  3. If you live on 34th Street and Fashion Avenue, you undoubtedly noticed the trees that fell. The first one was a Siberian Elm that came down on Monday. On Thursday, a Chinese Elm lost a massive branch. It fell on a car. Another tree fell last week on Delta Avenue and 28th Street. Public Works Department spokesperson Joy Contreras advised, “Trees may fall due to lack of or too much water, disease or trauma.” (LB Post)
  4. Mayor Robert Garcia announced that the city would spend $8.5 million on rehabilitation projects at MacArthur Park, $5 million for the Center for Inclusive Business & Workforce Development, and $1 million for TCC Family Health in Cambodia Town. (Mayor Robert Garcia)
  5. Christ the Good Shepherd American Coptic Orthodox Church held its fourth annual back-to-school event. The congregation gave away more than 700 new backpacks, school uniforms, and school supplies. The church is known for its outreach to at-risk residents and those experiencing homelessness.
