Happy Saturday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

If you’re getting whiplash from trying to keep up with changing mask rules, you’re not alone. The latest news is that they’re back on indoors, regardless of vaccination status. Also, there was a shooting on the 1700 block of Pine Avenue. Finally, a powerboat collision with the breakwater cost a dog its life.

  1. Masks are back on! Citing a “288% increase in average daily” COVID-19 cases, the LB Health and Human Services Department requires “masking indoors regardless of vaccination status.” (City of LB)
  2. A fatal shooting on the 1700 block of Pine Avenue leaves an adult female dead. This is the second murder in the same neighborhood within a span of four days. The last homicide occurred on the 300 block of East 17th Street. (My News LA, LBReport.com)
  3. A 65-foot powerboat collided with LB’s breakwater rocks “at high speed.” LB FD responded and rescued two humans and two dogs. A third dog is missing and likely dead. (LB Post)
  4. Crude oil is above $70 a barrel. In response, LB plans to drill new wells. It is noteworthy that the city “partially owns nearly 2,400 active and inactive oil wells.” Without the new wells, oil production could decrease by about 10% each year. (LB Business Journal)
  5. David McGill-Soriano founded Books and Buckets, a youth academy in LB’s Washington neighborhood. Combining academics with basketball, he builds a community that is removed from local gang culture. (Spectrum News 1)
