Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- The LBPD announced Saturday that it would “increase its officer presence in business and entertainment districts throughout the city.” The reason is a robbery at 5011 East 2nd Street, Saturday afternoon, when McCarty’s Jewelry was robbed by “four unknown male suspects carrying blunt, metallic objects.” (LB News)
- Maricela de Rivera will not run for the District 1 seat on the LB school board. On Thursday, she announced her decision not to vie for board member Megan Kerr’s seat, who is running for the 5th District City Council seat that will become available because Councilwoman Stacy Mungo declined to run for a third term. Rivera will instead “take a position in public health focused on equity.” This leaves Nubia Flores, Maria Isabel Lopez, and Sharifa Batts to run for the school board seat. (Press-Telegram)
- Former LB Poly and current Oregon State University student-athlete Alex Austin started a scholarship for disadvantaged students. “Last year, the NCAA started to allow athletes to make money on their image and likeness.” We learned Friday that 20-year-old Austin opted to do by way of opening a scholarship. The Alex Austin's Overcoming Adversity Scholarship is open to students anywhere in the United States. (ABC 7)
- In August of last year, a 72-year-old woman “tried to stop an argument between a man and a woman from escalating.” The man then hit her. We learned Wednesday that she died because of this attack. Detective Ethan Shear is now asking anyone who remembers the altercation in the 1000 block of Redondo Avenue or who may know the assailant to call the LBPD at 562-570-7244. (LB Tribune)
- The Long Beach Camerata Singers will perform ChoralFest at the Beverly O’Neill Theater on Sunday, March 13. They “are capturing the wondrous effects of Aurora Borealis through a ChoralFest concert inspired by the imagery and soul of the darkness and light found in the northernmost reaches.” Not surprisingly, the event is billed as an immersive experience rather than just a concert.
