- Update: The woman shot by the Millikan school safety officer is an 18-year-old mother of a five-month-old boy. The officer “saw a physical altercation take place between an 18-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl in the street.” The school safety officer is now on “paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.” “SSOs do not arrest but can detain pending an investigation by law enforcement. Deadly force is allowed in self defense or in defense of others to prevent death and great bodily injury,” a LBUSD spokesperson explained. (KTLA, LB Post)
- The LBUSD’s Superintendent of Schools, Jill A. Baker, Ed. D., issued a press release advising that the school district community is “collectively holding the shooting victim in our thoughts.” Students affected by what they saw should seek school counselor support. “Our school safety officers are hired to protect the physical safety of our staff and students on and around campuses. They are highly trained and held accountable to the established standards in their profession. Those standards will be used to assess the incident that occurred yesterday.” (LBUSD)
- A dead body was found near the shopping center on 2nd and PCH. The LBPD joined the LBFD at the 6400 block of PCH. “At this time, there are no signs of foul play,” the PD stated. (LB Post)
- The City hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new DeForest Park Environmental Education Center at 6255 DeForest Avenue. It will be a satellite office for the Conservation Corps of Long Beach, which is headquartered at 340 Nieto Avenue. It also operates “an existing Education, Conservation, Operations & Recycling Center at 3635 Atlantic Ave. as well as an Environmental Education Center at 3251 E. 19th St. in Signal Hill.” (City of LB)
- Council member Stacy Mungo Flanigan is ready to take her victory lap with the grand opening of the El Dorado Park West Multi-Purpose Sports Field. The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. See “the largest sports field in the City of Long Beach, measuring 210 feet by 315 feet” complete with the hotly debated synthetic turf at 2700 Studebaker Road.
