Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Update: The statue of Martin Luther King, Jr., which was vandalized with graffiti in July, has been restored. The camera system has also been upgraded, which should deter future vandals. A shout-out to Councilmember Suely Saro who made sure this happened quickly. (Long Beach City)
  2. It’s not just the empty shelves at Walmart and the grocery stores that are being a result of the delays at the LB and L.A. ports. Small businesses, too, are feeling the crunch. For them, supply chain problems are far more damaging. In addition, they are the hardest hit by the increases in shipping fees. (CBS)
  3. The Long Beach Airport’s Festival of Flight is coming back! Scheduled for November 6, there’ll be an “aircraft on static display, live music, food and beer trucks, activities for kids and helicopter rides for purchase.” This event typically draws about 10,000 attendees. (LBLN)
  4. Don’t panic if you’re seeing firefighters in full gear around the port. The LBFD, Coast Guard, and LAFD are jointly undergoing training exercises. They’ll repeat the exercise early next year. (ABC)
  5. The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at Cal State Long Beach is open again to the public. After a one-year closure because of the pandemic, visitors are once again able to enjoy the Zen Garden and koi ponds. The good news is that visiting the garden is now FREE; however, you have to make a reservation for a time slot online. (The HiLo)
