Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- So, where did the latest shootings happen? I’m glad you asked. Today’s a twofer. The first shooting happened Tuesday in the 1300 block of West Willow Street. A man sitting in his car a little before three in the afternoon noticed his car was hit by gunfire. About three hours later, another vehicle was struck by gunfire in the 300 block of East South Street. Both times, there were no injuries but plenty of evidence. (LBReport 1, 2)
- The Friday night DUI checkpoint at Lakewood Boulevard and Wardlow Street didn’t catch any drunk drivers. Out of 503 vehicles, 73 drivers were checked. All the police found were eight driver license violations. (LB Local News)
- The LB City Council is mulling over the creation of Kid Zones. It would ban childless adults from city playgrounds. The idea is that “playgrounds remain safe for children to use in the city by potentially barring adults not accompanied by a child from entering or remaining in them.” One example cited is the new Junipero Beach playground that had to close within days of its opening because adults damaged it. (LB Post)
- The average age of COVID-19 deaths is 59 years of age. In March 2020, the average age was 72 years. “Severe forms of COVID-19 are disproportionately impacting male patients, as 70% of the deaths since July 2021 have been men.” Mayor Robert Garcia sees this change as a warning that people need “to protect themselves and others around them.” (KTLA 5)
- If you’re a first responder, the Aquarium of the Pacific would like to welcome you FREE this Saturday. “Police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, doctors, nurses, EMS employees and 911 dispatchers are eligible for the free ticket.” Have your employee ID ready! (TheHiLo)
