Mother Accidentally Hits, Kills 1-Year-Old With Car In Long Beach: Police

Police say the child walked in front of the moving car "without the mother's knowledge."

LONG BEACH, CA — A one-year-old girl has died after er mother inadvertently struck her with her car at an apartment complex in Long Beach Wednesday evening, according to police.

The woman was moving her car around 6 p.m. in the 5500 block of Ackerfield Avenue when the child walked in front of the car, "without the mother's knowledge," and was struck, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the apartment complex and transported the child to a local hospital. Despite efforts by paramedics and medical staff, the child died at the hospital, according to the police.

Detectives are still investigating the crash, but believe impaired driving or distracted driving were factors.
