🌱 Mural At Bar Black Defaced + Demolishing The Found Theatre

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach.

(Patch Media)

Good day, people of Long Beach, and happy National Love Your Pet Day! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.

A vandal tagged a community effort at raising funds for a non-profit; which is why we cannot have nice things. Also, the City Place complex will see demolition that includes the Found Theatre. Finally, the Vistas del Puerto on Locust are open for residents!

Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Someone climbed over gas lines and crept on Bar Black’s patio on Sunday to deface the venue’s annual Valentine’s Day mural. It’s a fundraiser where folks donate money to a nonprofit and have a spray-painted heart placed on the side of the building. “The vandal spray-painted over large portions of the mural and tagged the bar’s windows and parklet dividers.” Neighbors and members of the business community came together to restore the mural from photographs taken. (Signal Tribune)
  2. The City Place complex has a new owner. It is owned by a “partnership among Waterford Property Company, Turnbridge Equities, and Monument Square Investment,” and we learned Saturday of the group’s plans. They plan demolition that will be “including the building bounded by 5th St on the north, 4th St on the south, The Promenade on the west, and Long Beach Boulevard on the east, as well as the building on the block east of the city parking structure between 5th St and 6th St,” which means that the Found Theatre will be gone. Residents are invited to the Found Farewell party on March 13 at 4 p.m. with RSVP. (LB Business Journal)
  3. The Vistas del Puerto at 1836-1852 Locust Avenue are completed, we learned Friday. Close to the A Line, it is an “affordable and supportive housing complex.” There are 48 apartments on five stories that are reserved for “formerly homeless persons suffering from chronic health conditions.” (Urbanize)
  4. A bicyclist died on Friday in a traffic collision, and a 59-year-old City employee was involved. The accident happened “at 7:42 a.m. near the intersection of 17th Street and Oregon Avenue.” The City worker remained on the scene and cooperated with the LBPD. "The preliminary investigation revealed the bicyclist was traveling westbound on 17th Street and did not stop for a stop sign at Oregon Avenue." (Signal Tribune, City of LB)
  5. The Aquarium of the Pacific is extending its evening hours on some February night. Instead of closing at 6 p.m., you can now see the residents of the Aquarium until 8 p.m. The special days will be February 20, 26, and 27. (NBC)
